The Korea Legislation Research Institute (KLRI) is Korea's only government-funded institute specialized in legislation. Since its establishment in 1990, the KLRI has supported the Korean government in formulating legislative drafts and has worked closely with the government, providing legislative solutions to pending policy issues.
The KLRI works for the purpose of supporting national legislative policies, and promoting timely and accurate dissemination of legislative information, as well as assisting the general legislative activities by systematically collecting and managing the legislative information, and investigating or researching juristic and legislative issues with extensive expertise. The KLRI’s primary functions are as follows: Investigation and research on foreign and domestic laws and legislative policies, both domestic and abroad; Systematic integration, management, dissemination and data-entry of foreign and domestic legislative information; Publication and supply of the Code of Laws of Korea and if needed, explanatory materials concerning the purpose and background of individual legislations; Investigation and modification of legal terminology, research for the Korea old legal codes before the introduction of current legal systems, and study on the history of the Korean legal system; Joint-research with other institutions foreign or domestic and invitation to legal experts for research; Entrustment of research projects to other domestic research institutions or individuals as well as performance of research projects at the Government or private organizations entrustment.
The KLRI carries legislative research on foreign and domestic laws and publishes approximately 300 research reports on an annual basis. The KLRI runs the Center for Legal Translations which provides English translation of Korean Statutes on line. The Center provides 96 percent of Korean Acts in English translation and regularly updates amendments. The KLRI also proactively takes the initiatives in promoting cooperation in legislative research and better law wih other domestic and foreign organizations.
The KLRI has taken a leading role in establishing the Asia Legal Information Network (ALIN) and has been serving as the ALIN Secretariat since its outset.
