     The Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka began its journey with a single Department of Law from the foundation of the University in 1921. At present, the Faculty of Law has 40 teaching staffs and 650 students.

 

     For undergraduate program every year 130 students are getting admitted. All successful undergraduates are allowed to get admission into LLM program. For foreign students there are separate rules and facilities equally applicable for the admission into the department. Other than LLB (Honours) and LLM degrees the Faculty offers two research degrees in Law, namely— MPhil and PhD.

 

      2200 marks equivalent to 132 credits against 24 subjects offered at the undergraduate level and 100 marks equivalent to 6 credits against four viva-voce exams taken at the end of each year final examinations, in-total 2300 marks equivalent to 138 credits. The mode of instructions is English.

 

     The Faculty offers General and Specialized Master Degree programmes. The specialized Masters programmes are: Master of Laws in International Law; Master of Laws in Human Rights Law; Master of Laws in Comparative Law; Master of Laws in Commercial Law; Master of Laws in International and Comparative Law; and Master of Laws in Gender in Law. 500 marks equivalent to 30 credits against 5 subjects and viva-voce and Research Monograph together comprising 100 marks equivalent to 6 credits, in total 600 marks equivalent to 36 credits for a student to qualify to obtain the LLM degree.

 

 

Other than academic curriculum there are extra academic curricula for the students. Those are—

 

1. Dhaka University Moot Court Society:

The Dhaka University Moot Court Society (DUMCS) established in the year 2006. The Dean of the Faculty of Law is the ex-officio President of the Society. It has been organizing and facilitating various teams to take part in different national, regional and international Moot Court Competitions.

 

2. Law Clinic:

The Faculty has a very well equipped Law Clinic room for conducting Clinical Legal Education programme. Besides academic studies within the classroom the department conducts regularly ‘Law Clinic’ programme for the 4th year (Hons) students with a view to make them acquainted with practical aspects of legal education in the bar and benches.

 

3. Faculty’s Departmental development and other activities:

Other than the regular academic program, there are series of seminars and symposiums, and public lectures for the intellectual enhancement of the students. Various activities of the Career Club and Cultural Club were undertaken for the students including the organization of Bengali New Year celebration by the faculty.

 

4. Computer Lab and Seminar Library:

The Faculty has a highly equipped Computer Lab for the students. All the classrooms are equipped with air-conditions. Other than the Dhaka University Central library the Faculty has a very sophisticated seminar library with more than 6000 law books, references and journals.

 

5. Law Journal:

The Faculty of Law publishes a yearly journal entitled ‘Dhaka University Law Journal (The Dhaka University Studies Part-F)’.

 

6. Scholarships:

There two trust funds for awarding scholarships to the poor, academically sound and meritorious students.
